Program Description:

The Swedish Program is a small program affiliated with the prestigious Stockholm School of Economics (SSE). The Swedish Program is committed to challenging its students intellectually and culturally. The distinctive features of the Program – our curricular breadth, high academic standards, commitment to cultural integration, university setting, and small size - effectively promote this multifaceted learning experience. Students take small, liberal arts classes in English and interact closely with their professors and peers on the Program and at SEE.  Swedish Program students are part of the SSE community and have access to classes, facilities, events, student clubs, and social activities. For additional information, visit The Swedish Program website.

Academics
The Swedish Program’s curriculum is distinguished by its comparative - European - perspective and commitment to an innovative pedagogical style. The classroom provides opportunities for active participation through small group discussions, tutorials, creative writing assignments, and study visits.
Students select 4 courses from a menu of liberal arts courses. Our affiliation with the Stockholm School of Economics provides students the unique opportunity to study alongside SSE students.

Language of Instruction
All courses are taught in English and no prior background in Swedish is required. The Swedish Program offers Swedish language courses at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.

Internships
Local internships give students the opportunity to learn new skills and experience Swedish professional culture firsthand. Several internship opportunities are offered every semester. Placements are limited and selected based on merit, academic background, and work experience. Internships are unpaid and not for credit.

Housing
We see housing as an important opportunity for cultural integration. Students have the choice of two immersive housing options: fully furnished single studio apartments or carefully selected host families.

Host Families
Our criterion for selecting host families is simple but demanding: the family must be motivated solely by their interest in a rewarding inter-cultural experience. Our students are treated as family members, not as borders. All students who elect to live with Swedish families have their own bedroom.

Apartments
Our single studio apartments are all in the same building, allowing you to live with both other Program students, as well as with international students from SSE. This option provides you with your own personal space, but at the same time, close interaction with other students. Our studio apartments are fully furnished and are located about 25 minutes from SSE.

Unique Program Excursions
Each semester The Swedish Program organizes an overnight trip to the Stockholm Archipelago and optional weekend trips to the Arctic Circle and the island of Gotland. The excursions are designed to explore Sweden’s rich culture, history, and geography beyond the capital city.

As suggested by former students

The Program is small, but sits in a large, international university.  It is the best of both worlds.  We get attention from a great staff and get to be on a campus.  We are not dropped off at some large university with no support, nor are we isolated in a building with just other Americans.

Stockholm is the hidden gem of Europe – it is fun, safe, beautiful, and sophisticated.

The staff and faculty are great, both professional and friendly.  You really get the chance to know them.

The housing is amazing – the apartments are nice and the host and contact families will do so much for their students.

Because everyone else seems to be going to England or Australia – it is fun to go somewhere different.

We are the only American undergraduates in the city – we even get a chance to go to the Nobel Prize Ceremony.

Swedes are very friendly and like to speak English.

It is so easy to find things to do – it seems as though there is always things going on:  concerts, sporting events, theater, clubs, festivals, etc.

Two one - week vacations each semester allowing us to travel wherever we decide to go.

It is interesting to live in a country where the quality of life is ranked so high globally. *

* Sweden was recently ranked third among 167 countries that were evaluated in terms of their level of economic prosperity, quality of life, and commitment to individual freedom and democracy. (The 2021 Legatum Prosperity Index)
